Refilwe is a writer, performer, producer, researcher and social activist. With a background in marketing, economics and social research, her particular interests lie in how people navigate and communicate their experiences and the use of the arts as a tool for activism and social dialogue.
She is the founder and executive director of Pier 85, a multi-dimensional art platform based in South Africa which investigates cultural intersections and the role of art in society. She is also a co-founder and producer of We Are Here, a platform that uses art and applied theatre techniques to engage men and boys in the gender based violence discourse and is a regular contributor to many magazines and publications.
Her artistic work centres around issues of displacement, process and interaction, she’s interested in the connection between society and art and the dialectic that exists between the individual and society and the individual with itself. She works within the context of social development and wants her work to stimulate dialogue and change.
